What Is Mathematics?
What is mathematics? It is difficult to express in a single sentence, so it may be better to describe it from a few different perspectives.
One could say that mathematics is rigorous philosophy. It investigates ideas such as truth, structure, quantity, and logical necessity, but it does so with a level of precision that philosophy itself often struggles to maintain.
Another way to think about mathematics is that it resembles physics. Mathematics expresses fundamental truths about the universe—and even more broadly, about reality itself.
For example, it is a theorem that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180°. But this number is essentially arbitrary because we chose to divide the full rotation of a circle into 360°.
What is not arbitrary, however, is the deeper statement: the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles—that is, a straight angle. Mathematics reveals relationships that remain true regardless of how we choose to measure them.
